English Vocabulary: “British and American English”

While there are certainly many more varieties of English, American and British English are the two varieties that are taught in most ESL/EFL programs. Generally, it is agreed that no one version is “correct”.

When using vocabulary from either one it is fine to interchange them, however this could be confusing for some as the list of vocabulary differences is quite extensive in each. In ABA you will have units in both American and British English, so you will learn how both sound.

As for the accent, simply learn the language first and as you progress you can start to find a way of speaking that suits you best and that you feel comfortable with.

Below we shall look at two common rules in the spelling in British and American English.

Spelling Rules

Words ending in -or (American) -our (British): color, colour, humor, humour, flavor, flavour etc.
Words ending in -ize (American) -ise (British): recognize, recognise, patronize, patronise etc.

The best way to make sure that you are being consistent in your spelling is to use the spell check on your word processor (if you are using the computer of course) and choose which variety of English you would like. As you can see, there are really very few differences between standard British English and standard American English. However, the largest difference is probably that of the choice of vocabulary and pronunciation.

 Vocabulary

As mentioned above there is a lot of vocabulary which is different in American and British English. We shall look at a list of a 130 words here that should make it easy for you to remember as they are the most common words in each. The best way to memorise them is through checking the meaning whilst reading or listening closely or whilst watching something in British or American English and referring to a dictionary if you are unsure. Don’t be scared to learn more or the differences in each as they are equally important, and by just knowing one you are limiting your knowledge of vocabulary in either British or American English.

They are placed with the American vocabulary first and then the British way of the same word.

In 2010, analysts say, the primary risk for gold is an earlier-than-expected increase in interest rates, especially in the U. In that case you can start your venture by placing gold jewelry rather than directly moving on with the gold bars. Freemasons is not limited to any one religion or community.

military requires the company 45 thousand pieces well, which include five models of about 1000 cc. Even some Chevrolet Corvettes between 1985 to 1996 Corvette C4s had Dana 44 ICA axles with independent rear suspension. Dodge reps refuse to call it the base model, and it does come standard with many features that are often optional in competitive vehicles, including acoustic windshield and front door glass, dual-zone climate control, Uconnect Touch 4.

Many companies worked “under the table” in a government style “black ops” kind of way to get their products into the hands of racers in order to get the knowledge they were after to develop their products further. Tired of worrying about apexes, suspension setups, and engine revs. Adamowicz is the only American driver to have driven both the 917K and its rival the Ferrari 512S and 512M.

Generally such older silver coinage tend to be steadily increasing currently. My article will provide you with the exact purchasing or selling data you need. The overseas trading last night had the precious metals, gold, silver and others up quite nicely, even with the equities showing plus side momentum, also.

Have you ever considered about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is fundamental and all. However imagine if you added some great graphics or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and clips, this website could undeniably be one of the very best in its field. Very good blog!
