Keep practicing with a new English exercise

Hello everyone,

How are you today?

I bet you have read the article by my colleague Sarah

about  “make” and “do”.

English learners usually get confused with these verbs.

Two other verbs that tend to be confusing are “miss” and “lose”.

Sometimes, I hear my students saying:

“I was late and I lost the bus….” (Lost is the past tense of lose)

And I then reply:

´Oh really? How did you lose it? It’s very big… and was it your bus?´

Because they have not lost the bus… they have missed it.

You lose something when you do not know where it is.

Like my best friend Sally who doesn’t lose her head because it is attached to her body… :-S

However you miss something when you are late and it has passed or it is over

I was late and I missed the plane.

Also, you can miss things, places and people when they are far away….

Like me…. I miss my hometown.

Yet, I love Barcelona and my students so that makes me feel much better when I get nostalgic missing Brighton….

Take care and have a nice day….

Marta
