“Men and women, old and young. Even a dog. Some of the 552 people in Taipei who were determined to turn the notion of impossible on its head, through mass handstands and headstands.

Organized by Hong Ming Chung, an acrobatic performer and art director of his own theater, the event was intended to convince Taiwanese that where there is a will, there is a way.

- When I travelled around Taiwan I discovered three things: first, most Taiwanese people are not doing what they are really interested in doing. Second, Taiwanese people did not know how to actualize their dreams. And third, our land needs to be protected. The handstands are to express the first two concerns, and I want to gather all the people to do handstands together and encourage more people to develop their talents and pursue their dreams. Nothing is impossible if you have a will.

Hung recently completed a photo and film project featuring him doing handstands at 100o around Taiwan.

He believes the wrong way up might be the right direction for problem solving.”

Vocabulary

Determined (adjective) - Not used before a noun, having a strong feeling that you are going to do something and that you will not allow anyone or anything to stop you —often followed by to + verb.

Notion (noun) - An idea or opinion.

Where there is a will, there is a way (saying) - If we have the determination to do something, we can always find the path or method to do it.

Actualize (verb) - To realize in action or make real.

In the past the only language we heard day to day was our own -  our family, friends and colleagues all spoke in the same tongue. And yet now, some of us work in offices with colleagues from all over the world. So how do we keep in touch? Through social media, of course.

In the following video, people explain how they use social media to keep in contact with friends, and what languages they use; perhaps you are Japanese but use Skype in English or maybe you are French but have your Facebook in Portuguese because you lived for a year in Brazil.
