Ci sono anche difficoltà nel conoscere le differenze tra can, could, may o might. Non preoccuparti, anche i madrelingua hanno difficoltà a vedere le differenze. Ma esistono trucchi per farlo. Qui ne parliamo.
Differenze tra may e might
La differenza basilare è il grado di certezza tra i due. Mentre may è più probabile, might indica minori possibilità che qualcosa accada.
Questa equivalenza in italiano può aiutarti:
May: Magari / Forse / Può darsi.
Might: Potrebbe essere che / Potrebbe darsi che.
May e might servono anche per chiedere il permesso, ma might è meno comune.
Esempi:
- Brian may go to lunch with them. (Può darsi che Brian vada a pranzo con loro.)
- He might call me this week. (Potrebbe chiamarmi questa settimana.)
- May I have a pen? (Posso avere una penna?)
- Agent, might I ask you a question? (Agente, posso farle una domanda?)
Differenze tra can e could
Can di solito indica abilità e could può significare il passato di can. Ma non si differenziano solo nel tempo verbale.
Can e could possono essere usati per chiedere il permesso, ma can è molto più colloquiale e could è più formale e educato.
Esempi:
- Can I please have some tea? (Posso prendere un tè, per favore?)
- Could you please show me another model? (Potresti mostrarmi un altro modello?)
- Can you help me, please? (Puoi aiutarmi, per favore?)
- Could you please open the door? (Potresti aprire la porta, per favore?)
