LONDON ENGLISH ACCENT

The main local accents you will hear in London are very different from each other. Perhaps the accent that you find easiest to understand and identify is the so-called Received Pronunciation, also known as BBC English or Queen’s English. Aside from this, there are two main accents native to London: the cockney accent, originating in the East End of London and considered the typical working-class accent, and the estuary English which, as its name indicates, is mainly spoken in areas near the River Thames and its estuary.

HOW IS THE LONDON ENGLISH ACCENT PRONOUNCED?

In the London cockney accent some letters are not pronounced, especially the T and H, and the sounds of some vowels are different. For example, in the sentence ‘Can I have a glass of water, please?’ the bold letters are not pronounced. Another distinctive aspect, and perhaps the one that adds greater complexity, is the rhyming slang, which consists of replacing a word with another that is part of a phrase that rhymes. For example, the word wife rhymes with the phrase ‘trouble and strife’ (trouble and conflict), so wife is substituted, and instead of saying ‘I was talking to my wife’ (I was talking to my wife), one says ‘I was talking to the trouble and strife’.

The estuary English, on the other hand, is found between Received Pronunciation and the cockney accent, but it is generally characterized by intonation and the use of question tags.
