Listening activities to learn English
1. The story game
With a group of friends, form a circle. One of the students stands in the center and must start telling a story.
However, they can only say one sentence.
Then, the turn passes to another who must say another sentence to continue the story. Continue with all participants until the story ends or everyone has participated at least twice.
This game helps you remember sentences you heard only once by associating them with a sequence of events.
2. The mirror
As in the previous example, with a group of friends, form a circle and have one stand in the center. Then say a sentence that expresses something he or she feels, thinks or has an opinion about.
For example:
I’m very happy today because tomorrow the weekend starts.
I don’t think we should continue using plastic bottles.
Then the turn passes to another participant who must repeat what the person said and also give their own perspective.
For example:
Katy is very happy because tomorrow the weekend starts. I’m also very happy because every Saturday I go jogging.
Katy doesn’t think we should continue using plastic bottles. I think it’s important to find alternatives that are widely accessible to make it easy to abandon that practice.
This exercise allows you to practice your listening and concentration because you have to remember what the people before you said and what their arguments were.
3. 3 seconds to speak
This listening exercise focuses more on vocabulary. One of the participants chooses a specific and general topic like sports, cooking, health, etc.
Each participant must say out loud a vocabulary word related to that topic. They have 3 seconds to say the word or they lose.
This exercise helps you pay close attention to what you hear and associate the words you hear on common topics.
