Pick is an English verb that means to choose or to grab. There aren’t many phrasal verbs with pick, but they have very different meanings so it is important to learn them. Some examples are pick at, pick up (which is not the same as pickup trucks or pick-up/pickup trucks), pick up on, pick out, pick on, and pick off.

Sentences with pick up

  • The teacher told me to pick up the pencil that had fallen from my desk. (The teacher told me to pick up the pencil that had fallen from my desk.)
  • Michael was trying to pick up girls at the party! (Michael was trying to pick up girls at the party!)

Example with pick up on

  • Did you pick up on that? It was a surprise to me that Michael would do that. (Did you notice? It surprised me that Michael would do that.)

Examples with pick out

  • He picked out the raisins among all the nuts. (He chose the raisins among all the nuts.)
  • I picked out my mom’s voice among the crowd’s. (I distinguished my mom’s voice among the crowd’s.)
  • If I were Sophie, I’d pick this skirt out, it is much cuter than the other one. (If I were Sophie, I would choose this skirt, it is much prettier than the other one.)
  • The policeman picked the thief out in the middle of the crowd. (The policeman identified the thief in the middle of the crowd.)

Example sentence with pick off

  • My brother picked off all the players in the new game. (My brother took down all the players in the new game.)

Example with pick over

  • Anne was picking over the wardrobe of dresses to find the nicest ones. (Anne was choosing from the wardrobe the dresses she thought were the nicest.)
