IRISH ACCENT

What language is spoken in Ireland? Well, like other countries, Ireland has two official languages, English and Gaelic; but English is the most widely spoken. As you might expect, the Irish variety of English is greatly influenced by Gaelic and, moreover, has a pronunciation very different from British English. However, this is one of the accents worth understanding, not only for traveling to this attractive country but also because it is really useful when doing business and learning about Irish people and customs.

HOW TO PRONOUNCE THE IRISH ACCENT?

Two of the most distinctive features of the Irish accent are the rhotic pronunciation and the Dublin 4 intonation. The first refers to pronouncing the intervocalic ‘r’ and the one at the end of the word, something that does not happen in British English. Regarding Dublin 4, named after the postal code of the Irish capital, it is an accent characteristic of that city where words have a slightly different sound; for example, right sounds more like ‘roisch’.

If you are going on a trip to Ireland, you should also know that aye is used instead of yeah (yes) or sure (sure), although this happens more frequently in the northern part of the island. In some cases, the Irish use English words with meanings different from the original; for instance yoke is a synonym of thing and the greeting that replaces what’s up? (how are you?) is what’s the story?
