ENGLISH PHONETICS OF THE LETTER E
PHONETIC TRANSCRIPTION OF WORDS WITH E IN ENGLISH
One of the first things you must remember is that the pronunciation of the letter E in English is different from Spanish. While in Spanish the E in ‘estoy’, ‘deuda’ and ‘trae’ is pronounced exactly the same, in English this letter has different sounds depending on the word it is in. Unfortunately, it is not that simple, but here we give you some ideas to keep in mind.
At the beginning of a word, such as elephant (elephant), /ˈel·ɪ·fənt/, the E sounds the same as in Spanish, ‘elefant’. The double E, as in teen (teenager), /tiːn/, sounds like a Spanish I, ‘tin’, the same as in some words that have the E in the middle, like dean (dean), /diːn/, ‘din’. There are two phonemes to represent the letter E in English, the phoneme /e/ which equals the Spanish E, and the phoneme /ɪ/ which resembles the Spanish I.
