Among the phonemes of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), there are those that correspond to the sounds of English phonetics. Knowing how to interpret them gives us a great advantage when studying this language, since they show us how each word should be pronounced in English. In this case, we will see the phoneme that represents the sound of the letter F.

THE PHONETIC TRANSCRIPTION OF THE LETTER F IN ENGLISH

As we mentioned earlier, knowing how to pronounce the letter F in English is not very complicated. First, the letter F, whose phonetic transcription is /f/, is pronounced ‘ef’ when alone. When part of a word, it will always sound as it does in Spanish, like the F in ‘frío’ (cold) or ‘afín’ (related). Let’s see some examples of words in English.

We will start with fool which means ‘tonto’ (foolish) and has this phonetic transcription: /fuːl/. Its pronunciation will be ‘ful’, with the F just like you would read it in Spanish. In the case of effort (effort), /ˈef·ət/, it’s exactly the same even though it has a double F; it is pronounced as a single Spanish F, ‘efort’. In deaf (deaf), /def/, it also makes no difference that the F is at the end of the word. As you can see, the only thing that varies in these examples is the pronunciation of the other letters; the F sounds just like it does in Spanish.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR PRONUNCIATION IN ENGLISH

Practice the pronunciation of the F with the example words in this post. Also, you can add foul (disgusting), /faʊl/; affordable (affordable); /əˈfɔː·də·bl/; and self (character), /self/. This way, you not only practice pronunciation in English but also expand your vocabulary.

Besides the f and ff, there are other letter combinations like -gh and -ph that are pronounced as /f/.

Combination –gh

Some words ending in gh are pronounced as /f/. See some examples:

Laugh /læf/ (laugh)

Tough /tʌf/ (tough)

Enough /ɪˈnʌf/ (enough)

Cough /kɑf/ (cough)

Rough /rʌf/ (rough)

Keep in mind that in other words with gh, the /f/ sound disappears. For example:

Through /θru/ (through)

Sleigh /sleɪ/ (sleigh)

Plough /plaʊ/ (plough)

Differences between the f and the v

In terms of pronunciation, it is common to compare the sounds of /v/ and /f/.

Although the mouth position is the same for both, that is, the upper teeth rest on the lower lip, with /v/ you should feel vibration. In the case of /f/ you only let the air flow through. See some examples:
