BRISTOL ACCENT

This accent is part of the English of the West Country and it is spoken by most people born in the southwest of England. This English comes from West Saxon and also has influence from Celtic languages and Low German. At first, some of its expressions, like the ones we leave you later in this article, may make you think it is almost impossible to understand, but once you start studying it, you will see that it is not so much. HOW IS THE BRISTOL ACCENT PRONOUNCED?

The  bristolian  has some very marked characteristics such as, for example, the  glottal ‘t’  in words like  water which is pronounced wa’er. It is also a  rhotic accent, that is, the ‘r’ is pronounced very markedly and words like  mother  which in British English sound like ‘mothah’, in Bristol are pronounced ‘motherrr’, just like in Irish English.

The Bristolians also have their own  regionalisms and phrases. Here are some for you to start practicing.

Ark at ee: Look at him/her. It is generally used in a friendly teasing tone. Look at him in a suit (he who always goes in jeans and t-shirt).

Alright my luvver?: How are you? How’s it going?

Mint innit: It’s good, isn’t it?
