LATIN AMERICAN ENGLISH ACCENT
Today the influence of Latinos is felt not only in demographic aspects but also in socio-cultural factors such as food, cinema, television, and music. Latinos, not only in Miami but in any city, are not hard to identify, whether by their physical appearance or by their accent, which can sound a bit strong to native English speakers.
The characteristics are distinctive. English phonetics tend to be somewhat difficult for Latinos, perhaps because there are many vowel sounds in English that do not exist in Spanish. Another common characteristic is that in most cases, Latinos do not make contractions in situations where native speakers would. For example, the phrase ‘I’ve seen her’ in a Latin English accent would be pronounced as ‘I have seen her’.
HOW IS THE LATIN ENGLISH ACCENT PRONOUNCED?
It is worth noting that Latinos find it difficult to pronounce the English ‘th’ sound. The ‘th’ sound in there or though is soft and pronounced like a ‘d’, while in with or think it is stronger and pronounced somewhat like a ‘t’.
Another tricky sound for Latinos is the ‘sh’. In Spanish this sound simply does not exist and thus Latinos substitute it with the closest Spanish sound, ‘ch’. In this way, shower is pronounced ‘chower’,share becomes ‘chare’ and shallow becomes ‘challow’.
