Learn British English
British English is one of the most spoken in Europe. Here we show you how you can learn this language to become a true British.
Tips to get to know British English
There are multiple types of English called British. English from these latitudes includes several dialects which can make many differences. We must point out that in Scotland, or Northern Ireland different types of British English are spoken.
Because of this, there is the Received Pronunciation (RP), a kind of most standard British accent, which is used, for example, on British public television (BBC). Queen Elizabeth II also speaks with this accent. But this accent is not the most used, since only 3% of the population uses it.
Considering this, we give you some tips to learn to speak British English:
1. Find yourself a native British English teacher
Without a doubt, the most useful thing is to find a native to help you learn to pronounce British English. If you planned to hire a private teacher or have conversation classes, locating someone from the country is essential. This last option, for example, can help you learn British English for free in exchange for teaching them Spanish, for example.
2. Learn the characteristic filler phrases of British English
The questions tags are filler phrases that natives usually use and that will help you understand British English better. They are very interesting and characteristic of this type of English.
Example:
- How beautiful, isn’t it? (How beautiful, don’t you think?)
3. Become a fan of the BBC
If you want to learn the most RP accent, you can do so by watching the BBC. Besides learning English, the BBC offers excellent and very interesting content. If your level is low, start with the news and documentaries. As you improve, switch to movies and series.
4. Never pronounce the -r at the end of a syllable
The -r at the end of the syllable is not pronounced in British English, but it serves to lengthen the syllable. This is one of the keys of this English.
Example:
- Person would not be pronounced /pérson, but /péeesan/.
5. Learn typical British English expressions
The British have some typical expressions of this language. To get to know them, watching series and English movies is the best option.
