Knowing them is one of the best ways to be prepared to know how a word or a letter is pronounced in English. In this case we will see the phonemes that will help you know how the letter P is pronounced.

Unlike the Spanish P which only has the pronunciation of ‘papá’ or ‘poeta’, the English version of this consonant has two different possibilities depending on the word it is in. Let’s see some examples so you can learn how to pronounce the letter P in English.

When it is found at the beginning or the end of a word, as in put which means to put and whose phonetic transcription is /pʊt/ or in top (t-shirt), /tɒp/, it will sound like it does in Spanish. The pronunciation of these words is ‘put’ and ‘top’. On the other hand, when the P is followed by an H the combination of both gives the sound of a Spanish F. Philosophy (philosophy), /fɪˈlɒs·ə·fi/, sounds like ‘filosofi’ in Spanish. As you can see, there are two phonemes that represent the English P and indicate its sound in a certain word /p/ and /f/.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION
