THE BIRMINGHAM ACCENT

Birmingham is a city in the center of the United Kingdom. Its accent is known as Brummie or Brummy. In England it is very well known and people can easily distinguish someone from Birmingham by their accent. Likewise, there are some words unique to its dialect that are not easy to understand.

THE BIRMINGHAM ENGLISH ACCENT

As you can imagine, many accents coexist in England. In this case, Birmingham has its own characteristics regarding its accent, especially in the changing sound of some vowels and also in the introduction of some dialect words. All of this can cause some difficulty in comprehension and communication.

HOW IS THE BIRMINGHAM ENGLISH ACCENT PRONOUNCED?

If you are interested in understanding English and the Brummie dialect, let’s start with some very common words.

Bawlin = To cry

Stop bawlin please!

Bottler = A popular and nice song

For me, Paradise by Coldplay was a bottler.

Our wench = This is an affectionate term used for a sister or it can also be used by a husband towards his wife.

Our wench was in the library when I got home.

Pop = A carbonated drink

Do you want ice on your pop?

And now, if you are also interested in knowing the Birmingham English pronunciation, let’s look at some of the sounds that change.

First, you must remember that in Birmingham English some vowel sounds change, for example the sound of the I. It is very common that instead of I’llyou hear /oil/, or instead of fine you hear /foin/. And if you want to refer to makeup, which in English is makeup you will probably hear /maicup/.

Another sound you will find different is the endingng. For example, in all verbs ending in -ing. Usually in English, this ending is pronounced /n/ as in singing /sɪŋin/, while in the Brummy accent the final ‘g’ is always pronounced, that is /sɪŋiŋ/.
