HOW IS THE WELSH ENGLISH ACCENT PRONOUNCED?
In many speakers, you will find that the use of isn’t it? as a ‘tag question’ is very common. You will also see that it is very common to place both the subject and the verb after the predicate. They use this for emphasis. For example: Working on Sunday, she is.
Also, in some parts of Wales, the word ‘where’ is added ‘to’, for example: ‘Where to is his wallet?’
Moreover, there is a very common expression believed to have been transferred from Welsh and it is the phrase look you at the end of the sentence.
Now, although it is very difficult to convey intonation in a written article, the intonation of Welsh English varies greatly from the standard. Usually, there are rises and falls in intonation in parts of the sentence where normally there would not be.
And finally, the most characteristic phoneme of Welsh English is the use of an alveolar ‘r’ /ɾ/. That is, as if the tongue taps repeatedly to produce the r sound. For example, the word rubbish in standard English is pronounced /rʌbɪʃ/ but in Welsh English it is pronounced /ɾʌbɪʃ/.
