What are the MCER levels in English?

What Does the MCER Mean?

The MCER or Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is a scale that organizes language proficiency into six levels.

These range from A1 to C2 and are grouped into three general levels: Basic Level, Intermediate Level, and Advanced Level.

MCER English Levels

Basic level

Level A1

At this level, you will be able to understand and use basic English expressions. You will learn nominal phrases and start using the verb to be. However, your vocabulary will be limited, and you will not be able to follow conversations at normal or fast speed.

Level A2

Level A2 involves the ability to communicate simply about everyday topics. Therefore, at this MCER language level, you will recognize basic expressions related to familiar and daily life contexts. Additionally, you will be able to easily read short, simple texts.

Intermediate level

Level B1

At level B1, you will be able to understand the main idea of clear texts related to familiar contexts like work and school. Also, you will be able to visit an English-speaking country and manage the situations you encounter there.

Level B2

At level B2, you will be able to speak with a certain degree of fluency and understand the main idea of complex texts. You will also be able to write clear and precise texts on various general topics.

Advanced level

Level C1

Level C1 is the English level required in work and academic contexts. Upon reaching it, you will understand the implicit meaning of complex texts. You will not hesitate searching for the correct word or phrase in your conversations and will write coherent texts about complex topics.

Level C2

Level C2 means you can speak fluently and spontaneously like a native. You will be able to understand practically everything you read or hear and will be capable of reconstructing arguments and presenting them coherently.
