What is the phonetics of the X in English?

THE PHONETIC TRANSCRIPTION OF THE X IN ENGLISH

The X that we use in Spanish when we pronounce ‘xylophone’ or ‘Ximena’ is not so different from the English X, so it will not be one of the letters that causes you the most problems. First, in English the letter x is called ‘ex’ and represented with the phoneme /ks/. If you read this phoneme as you would in Spanish, you will have the sound of the X in English.

Now we will see two examples of English words with X so you can learn the pronunciation of this letter while expanding your vocabulary. With the X at the end of the word we have ex (ex) /eks/ which is pronounced exactly the same as in Spanish. In the case of axioma which is axiom, /ˈæk.si.əm/ the pronunciation is also the same as in Spanish.

Although most words with X are pronounced with the /ks/ sound, there are other variations.

Some words with X are pronounced with the /gz/ sound, considering that the X precedes the stressed syllable, and that there is a vowel sound after the X.
